 POND

MY POND IS GREEN !
Probably the most common problem we hear regarding ponds.
This can be a big problem with new ponds that haven’t had the time for their plants to become established.
In the more mature pond this can be caused by increased sun light in summer.
Over feeding can also promote the growth of algae.
We have a range of solutions ranging from Ultra violet sterilisers to chemicals. We also have wildlife friendly treatments based on Barley straw extracts which are very effective. And of course there is the old favourite surface covering plants such as water lilies that provide shade and feed on the same nutrients as the algae.
NOTE:UV bulbs should be changed at the start of the season.

MY POND WATER IS BROWN !
This is caused by silt suspended in the water, this silt has built up on the bottom of the pond and is then stirred up by the fish or perhaps a waterfall.
We can provide a wild life friendly additive, which works by sticking the particles of the silt together making them heavy and causing them to sink to the bottom. They can then be hoovered or siphoned out of your pond during your routine maintenance.
Silt can also be stirred up by the pond pump being on the bottom of the pond. It is a good tip to place your pump on a plinth to raise it off the bottom.

MY POND IS COVERED IN GREEN HAIR LIKE ALGAE !
Blanket Weed is a very common problem. Again we can help with a wildlife friendly product based on Barley Straw extract which is very effective but does need successive treatments.
NOTE: Over stocking can exasperate the problem of blanket weed due to the amount phosphate in the fish’s waste.

SHOULD I STOP FEEDING MY POND FISH IN WINTER ?
During the warmer months you should feed your pond fish once a day with a high protein food, but only as much as they can consume in 5 minutes.
Once the temperature starts to drop below 150c you should move on to feeding a wheat germ food, and when the temperature drops to below 100c you should look to stop feeding.
